Lost Johann Sebastian Bach Compositions Performed for First Time in Over Three Centuries

Historical organ composition
The composer is considered to have written the pair of organ works at the start of his musical journey

Recently identified musical pieces by the musical genius Bach have been presented and performed in the European nation for the first time in 320 years.

The nation's Culture Minister Wolfram Weimer called the unearthing of the two compositions a "great moment for the global music scene".

They originally drew interest of a musical scholar in 1992 when he was cataloguing Bach manuscripts at the Royal Library of Belgium.

The organ pieces - the Chaconne in D minor and Chaconne in G minor - were dating unknown and without attribution. The scholar spent the subsequent thirty years working to authenticate the authorship of the pieces.

Landmark Presentation

They were played at the Thomas Church in Leipzig, where Bach is laid to rest and where he worked as a cantor for twenty-seven years.

The pair of works were performed by Dutch musician the musical performer, who said he was proud to be able to perform them for the initial performance in over three centuries.

He said the works were "remarkably sophisticated" and would be "a great asset for contemporary organ players, as they are also suitable for reduced-scale organs".

Cultural Relevance

They are believed to have been composed early in Bach's career, when he was working as an organ teacher in the community of Arnstadt in Thuringia.

The researcher, who is now the leader of the Bach Archive in the municipality, said they displayed several qualities particular to the artist.

"In terms of style, the compositions also feature aspects that can be found in Bach's works from that era, but not in those of other musicians," he said.

They are believed to have been recorded in 1705 by one of Bach's pupils, Salomon Günther John.

At a revealing of the works, the expert said he was "almost completely confident that the composer had composed the two pieces" and they have now been incorporated into the official catalogue of his compositions.
