Larian Studios Unveil a Fresh Divinity, Declaring it Their Largest RPG Ever
The speculation about this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a strange statue. The question is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is developing a brand-new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer featuring intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal opening of infernal gates.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.
That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This choice of words hints that the team could be designing a real-time experience rather than another tactical title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it kicked off the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, branching plots, and flexible progression—qualities that recently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom granted to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths you can achieve by choosing a distinct build with a personal story.
The series is also famously flexible, enabling players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be solved in a variety of manners, often in surprising fashion.
- You might find an answer because you heeded something a dog told you.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a inventive way.
More to Come
It is precisely these elements that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can anticipate another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
