Democratic lawmakers Criticize Trump After He States They Should Face Death Penalty
Lawmakers from the Democratic party voiced outrage after the ex-president alleged a contingent of Democratic congress members of being "betrayers" and asserted they should be arrested and sentenced "by death" following their publication of a controversial video.
The Recording That Sparked the Controversy
The recorded message, published on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic congress members who formerly worked in defense or security roles.
"As we did, you all swore an pledge to protect and support this founding document," the representatives stated in the brief video. "Currently, the risks to our democratic foundation aren't just from overseas, but from domestically. Our laws are explicit, you can decline unlawful commands, you can reject illegal orders, you should refuse illegal orders. No one has to follow orders that break the statutes or our national charter."
Donald Trump's Angry Reaction
The recorded statement reportedly trigger a furious reaction from the former president.
On Thursday morning, Trump wrote on his preferred platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional message, he stated: "This is really concerning, and Harmful to our Nation. Their statements cannot be permitted to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a additional post, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also shared a statement that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Representatives Answer
Following Trump's remarks on that day, Top Democrats issued a joint statement condemning the comments.
"Partisan aggression has no position in this nation," they declared. "Representatives who appeared in the video all served our nation with exceptional patriotism and honor. We strongly denounce Donald Trump's disgusting and harmful death threats against members of Congress, and urge GOP representatives to strongly do the same."
The opposition officials also stated that they had been in communication with law enforcement "to make certain the safety of these officials and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must right away take down these unhinged online messages and retract his aggressive rhetoric before he leads to violence," the statement continued.
Officials' Firm Answer
The officials who participated in the video also released a declaration.
"We serve as former service members and defense specialists who value this United States and swore an oath to defend and defend the founding document of the United States," they declared. "This commitment lasts a lifetime, and we plan to maintain it. No intimidation, intimidation, or promotion of aggression will prevent us from that fundamental duty."
"The most revealing aspect is that the ex-president views it liable to punishment by death for us to reiterate the legal requirements," they continued. "Our service members should understand that we have their support as they execute their pledge to the founding principles and duty to adhere to only legal commands. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our obligation."
They continued: "Every American must unite and censure the president's demands for our execution and political violence. This is a time for principled stance."
More Governmental Comments
The Opposition leader also condemned Trump's remarks and posted on social media: "We must be absolutely clear: the ex-commander in chief is requesting the execution of public representatives."
He stated: "This is an outright THREAT. Each congressional member, all representatives, the entire nation – irrespective of political affiliation – should denounce this immediately and unconditionally."
The Conservative official supported Trump's assertion that the Democrats had engaged in "treason", characterizing the video as "extremely improper", stating: "This represents very risky, you have leading members of the government instructing soldiers to ignore directives, I think that's without precedent in US history."
The GOP official also reportedly told the press that in what he reviewed of Trump's messages, Trump was "explaining the violation of sedition" but that "lawyers have to examine the terminology and establish all that."
White House Reaction
During a administration briefing on that day, when asked by a media member, "Does the president want to put to death elected officials?", the executive branch representative responded: "No."
"We should understand about what the president is responding to," the spokesperson stated. "You have current representatives of the American legislature who coordinated to orchestrate a digital communication to members of the American armed forces, to current military personnel advising them to disobey the executive's proper directives."
She added: "The integrity of our military depends on the hierarchy, and if that system is violated, it can result in fatalities, it can result in disorder, and that's what these elected officials ... are essentially promoting."
