Astronaut Reveals Mental Health Struggle After Wave of Backlash After Historic Trip

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her battle with depression after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also featured well-known figures.

The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who challenged its value and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a online statement, describing a check-in call from a mission companion in the days following the journey.

She described the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Buried Under Misogyny

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in women's health research and conducted tests during the mission, said everything she had worked for – from her scientific research and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her roots – was drowned out under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.

She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was paused after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

The Fog Begins to Lift

In the time since achieving her goal, she has stated the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the supporters whose messages of encouragement were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she said.

She noted that despite the negativity, considerable good had emerged from the mission, including increased focus on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

Flight Details

The self-operating spacecraft departed its launch site in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a brief suborbital flight that exceeded the Kármán line of outer space.

The group of women also comprised leaders in multiple disciplines.

The enterprise behind the mission is a private space firm established by a well-known tech mogul.
